                      Financial Aid Awareness Month

Did you know that February is Financial Aid Awareness Month? Sounds funny?

Go ahead, check. Do a search on Financial Aid Awareness Month , see there really is a month devoted to Financial Aid Awareness.

The reason ? For many students and their families the dream of going to College is grounded in the reality of figuring out how to pay for it.

In recognition of the fact that finances can be a barrier to higher education an entire month has been set aside to focus on spreading the word about the various financial aid opportunities.

So on these long winter days take some time to learn more about the financial aid opportunities available to students. Visit sites like www.federalstudentaid.ed.gov

and www.hesc.org  and learn about Federal and New York State aid opportunities.

Make a list of all the Colleges and Universities you are considering, don’t forget to include your dream schools, and visit their websites to find out about their scholarships and financial aid opportunities.

If reading through information is not for you then take the time to watch Financial Aid TV, yes there really is such a thing as Financial Aid TV. Visit http://www.stjohns.edu/services/financial

So enjoy February and all it has to offer but find time to be aware and plan for your dream. In the words of Walt Disney, "All dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them."

Time To File For Financial Aid

The New Year is in full swing and it is now time to file your 2012-2013 FAFSA.  This past weekend we held our annual FAFSA Filing 101 event on Campus and walked students and their families through the online FAFSA application.

Our goal is to encourage all students to file a FAFSA.( Free Application for Federal Student Aid) The application is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov The application and the instructions are available both in English and in Spanish.

Remember help is available. The FAFSA online process walks students and families step by step through the application and provides help along the way.

In addition New York State’s Higher Education  Services Corporation (HESC) offers free live help as part of their on going efforts to promote Student Financial Aid Awareness.

The FAFSA Assistance Hotline is available Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon - 5:00 pm through February 28 . Call 1-800-808-1790 or send an email to FAFSA help@hesc.org

The application is free so the only cost is in time and it is time well spent.

So do not delay complete your FAFSA application today!

                         FAFSA Assistance Hotline

I wanted to let you know about a great financial aid filing assistance service being offered by New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC).

Parents and students can call 1-800-808-1790 for answers to any question related to completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The Hotline is open February 2nd from 12 noon to 6:00 pm EST. This Hotline then continues to be open every Wednesday from 12 noon to 6:00pm EST. through February 25th. Families can also email their questions any time to FAFSAhelp@hesc.org.

This offer to help with the FAFSA filing process reflects the importance related to filing for Financial Aid and HESC’s commitment to Financial Aid Awareness
Planning and Preparation

As New York braces for yet another winter snow storm, planning and preparations are under way. The salt is being sprinkled on all the walkways at the University and there is talk throughout the Office as plans are made to pick up last minute essentials in case we are once again snowed in.

All this planning and preparations are a good thing. It makes sense to plan. While it does not help eliminate the snow it helps us manage its affect on us.

Likewise planning and preparing for financial aid is a good thing. Filing for aid in it self does not finance a higher education but it does provide everyone involved with the information needed to plan and prepare.

Higher Education is a major investment and filing a Free Application For Federal Aid (FAFSA) is essential. In this economy all should file. No one knows how many ‘storms” are in our future.

The 2011-2012 is available now. All new students and their families if they have not filed should file as soon as possible. Continuing Students should file their Renewal FAFSA.

A Snow Day would be the perfect day to find the time to file. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov

                         Preparing For the New Year

2010 seems to have flown by and preparations are under way throughout the world to welcome the New Year.  The past year had its challenges especially from a financial perspective and I think that the more informed we are as consumers and the more prepared we are with regard to all aspects of our financial life the better. Planning and financing a higher education can be one of life’s many financial challenges so plan and prepare.

Financial Aid TV (FATV) is a great financial literacy resource available at www.stjohns.edu/services/financial.  You can learn about the various federal aid programs through a series of short videos podcasts on a variety of financial aid related topics. There are also videos available on Education Tax Benefits and Credits.

There are also several federal websites that are great resources for learning about financial aid and financial planning in general. They are: www.mymoney.gov and www.studentaid.ed.gov

So add FATV and financial planning to your To Do List for the New Year!

                               Fall Clean Up

The new academic year is in full swing and fall clean up is under way through out the University. Now that our peak registration period is behind us the focus shifts to processing paper work, completing verification cases and  reaching out to students to resolve any outstanding issues.

All students should double check their personal UIS accounts to insure that they have no outstanding requirements. It is important to finalize all financial aid and payment issues to avoid delays in the spring course selection process.

So embrace the spirit of the Fall season and join us as we clean up and prepare for the next season.

Simply Put, Welcome

Today is the start of the 2010 Academic Year. Where did the summer go?

The campus is hopping with activity as new and continuing students come together in the shared pursuit of a college education.

So for today no notices or reminders, just simply, Welcome!

Welcome back to all returning students and welcome to campus to all our new students.

Enjoy the day and the year.
Ready, Set, Move In

Ready, Set, Move In

Preparations are under way on campus for the new student Move-In on August 25th.  It is an exciting time on campus as all the Offices come together to prepare and welcome all our new resident students.

To insure a smooth Move-In I encourage all students and their families to double check that they have finalized their enrollment. By this I mean that they have set up a payment plan or made payment for the Fall term.

Finalizing payment and confirming enrollment is easy and can all be done online via the student’s personal UIS account.

Planning and finalizing payment now will insure that there is more time to explore and enjoy the Move-In day experience.

Undergraduate Bill Due Date Fast Approaching

St. John’s University undergraduate bill due date is July 28th.

I encourage all students to review their current fall 2010 term bill online via their personal UIS account.

Remember : Students and authorized users can pay St. John's University student bills online. Students can access the Student Account Suite via UIS and authorized users will be provided with a web link at the point of authorization.

       Financing Options Are Available:

Spread the cost of tuition and fees over the semester by enrolling in one of St. John's University’s Payment Plans.

  • Enroll in a tuition payment plan easily online via UIS
  • Set up automatic installment payments using a credit card or electronic check
  • Receive email notifications as your plan adjusts to changes on your account
  • Authorized users can also take advantage of one of the University’s Payment Plans

Federal PLUS Loan: A Form of Financial Aid Self Help for Parents

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes that parents may need support to assist their children with the financing of their higher education. The Federal PLUS loan was established to provide that support.

The Federal PLUS program is designed to provide parents with the opportunity to borrow funds to cover the educational expenses of dependent children.

Parent borrowers must meet all basic federal aid eligibility requirements and not have an adverse credit history.

Like Stafford Student Loans, parents incur a binding legal obligation to repay the loan in full, including interest and any applicable fees. It is essential that when parents plan for educational costs, that they also plan for future repayment of these loans.

Parent borrowers should be familiar with all the terms and conditions of the Federal PLUS Loan and I encourage the use of the federal loan repayment calculator which is available at www.studentaid.ed.gov.

The decision to borrow is and should be difficult, but once the decision has been made the process is easy. Please visit http://www.stjohns.edu/services/financial/undergraduate

for further information. A tutorial on the application process is also available at www.stjohns.edu/services/financial/award.
