| Michael DiPiazza Senior Assistant Director of Admission
| | Academic Status: Faculty/Administrator | This is my second year in admissions at St. John's and my fifth year in the business. My first job in admissions was to just get my MBA paid for, but I quickly took a liking to working with students, their families, guidance counselors, and the different cycles we go through during a year. So needless to say, I definitely just "fell" into this type of work and never expected to be making a career of it. In addition to being an avid runner and using my grill, I am a diehard Yankees fan, listen to Springsteen way to often, love waching college basketball, and enjoy days at the beach during the summer. I'll also be getting married in March 2010, so I definitely have a lot to look forward to in the next few months. I hope everyone enjoys reading my blog, but especially pay attention to what the students are writing. Each of their personalities really come out in their writing and they have a lot of great insights into what life at St. John's is like. | | |

In the past five days, I’ve been fortunate enough to make into the City to see the St. John’s play at Madison Square Garden. On Saturday, Jan. 21 we hosted about 75 accepted students and their guest for the game against Villanova. Despite a loss in overtime, it was an exciting afternoon of basketball at MSG.
Last night we also hosted school counselors for the game vs. West Virginia. On this night, the Red Storm didn’t disappoint and completely dominated the Mountaineers, winning 78-62. It was fun to meet with guidance counselors in an atmosphere outside of a high school setting or college fair.
That is one of the neat parts about working at St. John’s or especially being a student. Madison Square Garden is going through a three-phase transition right now- the first phase has been completed- but it will still be one of the most historic buildings in New York City and one of only two historic sports arenas in NYC- the other being Yankee Stadium. So as a student at St. John’s, you have the opportunity of enjoying that privilege on a weekly basis during the winter months of college basketball season. Hanging high above the Garden floor are the legends of the Knicks, Rangers, the number of concerts Elton John and Billy Joel have sold out at MSG, and most importantly Lou Carnasecca’s 526 career victories banner. It doesn’t get more impressive than that.
So next time you’re at the Garden, possibly as a St. John’s student, take a look above and notice “Louis” banner- it will definitely give chills knowing you are a part of all this, even on a January night! 1/11/2012
It doesn’t feel like that long ago that it was 85 degrees, sunny, and I was making my travel schedule for the fall 2011 recruiting season. While this winter has been pretty warm, August certainly seems like it was only yesterday.
Roughly 100 high school visits and college fairs later and we’re into the second week of January and the application review season. That’s the nice part about working in admissions, it’s very cyclical. During the fall we are out of the office meeting with high school students and their families (like yourself), during the winter we are trapped to our desks reading your applications (among other projects). Come spring we’re back on the road meeting with high school juniors and their families, while also still meeting with the high school seniors who have been accepted for the following fall. Just when you think it’s time to take a breath during the summer, you’re back to planning for the upcoming academic year. All-in-all, there is never a dull moment.
Many of you have hopefully received your acceptance letters- or you’re about to- and are trying to figure out when you’ll visit campus. Before making that decision, be sure to check out our events calendar to see what exciting gatherings on campus we’ll be offering this spring. If none of those fit into your schedule, don’t forget we have tours and information sessions twice a day, Monday through Saturday.
We all look forward to welcoming you to campus in the near future! 6/9/2011
Can you imagine your first college experience being in Rome or Paris? Did you ever think that was how you would get the best four years of your life going? At St. John’s, that is a possibility through our Global Passport program. This unique opportunity lets first-year St. John’s students- freshmen or transfers- spend 10 days on our European campuses in either August, January, or May. The trip coincides with a course you are taking in either the fall or spring semester, so it will either start in Rome or Paris or finish there.
The application deadline is June 21, 2011, so please submit it ASAP. You can apply by visiting our University website here and downloading the form and mailing it in. There is a $250 deposit required with the application, which will go toward the $1,750 it costs for the program (airfare is additional).
Ciao! 5/5/2011
If you haven’t yet submitted your enrollment deposit, St. John’s has extended the deadline to Wednesday, May 18, 2011. We look forward to welcoming you to St. John’s this fall and we can’t do so until you enroll.
To submit your deposit online, please do here. You will need to log into the UIS system using your Xnumber (on top of your acceptance letter) and the PIN is your two digit month/day/year birth date. For instance, if your birthday was today, it would be 05/04/11. 4/29/2011
If you are an accepted student for the fall 2011 and have not seen our campuses, there is still time to check us out. We will be holding our regular information sessions and tours Monday through Saturday, twice a day, until May 21. Plus we are offering Accepted Student Information Sessions on both our Queens and Staten Island campuses. You can register for an Accepted Student Information session here or for a regular tour by contacting the University at 888 9STJOHNS.
We look forward to seeing you on campus! 2/22/2011The St. John’s men’s basketball team is No. 23 in the country, the first time the Red Storm has been ranked since 2000. With four games remaining in the regular season, the Storm are poised for their first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2002.
Check out this video of coach Steve Lavin and senior guard Dwight Hardy, whose heroics on Saturday against then fourth-ranked Pitt helped earn him his second straight Big East Player of the Week honors.

Decision letters at St. John’s have started rolling out, so if you have completed your application, you can expect to receive a letter from us in the near future.
This is definitely an exciting time of year for college admissions officers. We’ve completed the fall recruitment season, survived the holidays and at some schools the early decision and early action deadlines, and we’re now hunkered down reading mounds of applications. We’re also preparing for on campus events this spring, while also making sure that you’ve been notified of your decision.
So with that, let me ask you a question that we debated in our office prior to the Christmas break: how would you like to receive notification of your decision? Traditionally, and this still continues, students have always been notified via a letter delivered to their home. But in this instant gratification society we live, are you ok receiving your decision via e-mail, text message, on a microsite, or a Facebook message? Ok, so I’m kidding about Facebook right now, but you never know what the future might hold. It wouldn’t surprise me if in the future a college’s primary source of communication with students was through Facebook or other social networking sites.
I’m a bit of a traditionalist, though. My favorite baseball stadium is Fenway Park, yet I’m a diehard Yankees fan. I believe you should always put your Thanksgiving turkey in the oven, not a deep fryer, and you should call your mom everyday, not text her. But until I got my iPad last week, I always thought reading the newspaper was better when you had the real version in front of you. Reading the New York Times on the iPad was like the reading the real thing, just without the paper spread across the kitchen table. Thus, I’m starting to wonder if notifying students of their acceptances into a college via e-mail will be just as exciting as opening a letter delivered by snail mail.
With that, please comment on your opinion of receiving a decision letter in the traditional form or instantly via e-mail. 11/23/2010
Be sure to post your candid pictures of Johnny Thunderbird from Sunday’s Open House by the end of today! It’s not too late to win a free St. John’s t-shirt!
You can access our Undergraduate Admission Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JointheStorm.
Also, be sure to “friend” Johnny Thunderbird so that you can keep up with all things St. John’s! 11/10/2010
At the Queens campus Open House on Sunday, Nov. 21, St. John’s new mascot Johnny Thunderbird will be making an appearance. Johnny, who turned one in September, has risen to great fame at St. John’s in the past year and now we want to make sure you know who he is, too.
So, if you are attending the Queens Open House on Nov. 21, take a picture of Johnny Thunderbird and be one of the first 25 prospective students to post it to the wall of the Undergraduate Admission Facebook page and you’ll win a Red Storm t-shirt. Johnny will be very visible on campus until about 1 p.m., so be on the lookout for him.
To register for the Open House, please visit us here.
I’m not as popular as Johnny Thunderbird, but if you see me on campus, make sure you stop and say hello!
