1/5/2012When we send students abroad, we hope that they will immerse themselves in the culture as much as possible. The best way to do this is often through food. While in a restaurant or walking around the streets of Rome, I had my students take note of what the locals were eating.
1. Do not eat in the first restaurant you come to after visiting a tourist site - This is an issue of price and quality. While not absolute, the trattoria down the alley and off the beaten path tends to always have better food and prices.
2. Pizza or pizza - Know that there is really two different types of pizza in Italy. The original pizza (from Naples) is the circular thin crust available at many restaurants. Pizza al taglio (by the cut) is the street version of pizza with large pizzas that the attendants cut to order and sell by the weight. Both are amazing in their own way.
3. Try something new - When we give orientations to new students preparing to travel abroad. Find out the local food traditions. In Rome, artichokes, blood oranges, pasta cacio e pepe, and saltimbocca are all standards of the cuisine. Try it once at least. Then you can add it to the things to brag about when you get home. 1/4/2012Today after class, we gathered up the class and took the short walk to the Metro station. Apart for the small size of Rome's Metro (Subway to you New Yorkers). Students were shocked at how clean the trains were. Large, white cars connected so that you can look from one end of the train all the way to the other. We exited the Metro out in front of the Coliseum. The shock of walking out of the efficient and modern Metro and coming face to face with the nearly 2,000 year old arena was yet another AHA moment.
After a tour of the building, students learned that the Latin word for sand (which covered the floors of the Coliseum) is "arena" a word that has become so engrained into our language that we could hardly believe it was ever not part of our language. We also toured the Roman forum. The forum acted as the meeting place for Romans to discuss politics, eat food, and pass their days. 1/3/2012This morning at 9 am all the students met with me for our first class in Rome. To gain a further understand of the culture of Rome, students read Tobias Jones' great book on Italy The Dark Heart of Italy. In the text Jones explains the difference between the idyllic Italy that we know from poetry and history and contrasts it with the dark underbelly that is also a major part of the history of the country. We discussed the relatively young nation of Italy (not unified until the 1860s) and the relevance that this has on the culture of cities. Students practice a bit of Italian to help them get by and we packed up to head out on our first walking tour.
Traveling to the Vatican Museum was the first real "AHA moment". The AHA moment is phrase that we use often while taking students abroad. It is that moment where students realize that there is more to the world than what they have always lived around. Today, not only did we get to see the world's largest church (St. Peter's Bascilica) but we also entered a new country on foot (Vatican City). The Swiss Guards were in full regalia at their posts and students were awestruck by the Sistine Chapel. Though many students had seen pictures of Michelangelo's work before, all agreed that they had never really "seen" it before. 1/2/2012As the sun began to rise across Italy, I caught the first signs of the Roman coast from out the window of the plane. It was a beautiful beginning for the students enrolled in the university's unique Global Passport Program. The program gives freshmen the opportunity to extend one of their core classes for a 10-day experience in Rome. While there, students stay in at the University's newest campus just minutes from center city. For most of the students, this is to be their first time leaving the country as as we touched down everyone was to experience the city as the Romans did. Safely on the ground, students were tired, but nothing that a good cup of gelato couldn't fix. I will continue to check-in during my stay in the Eternal City to give updates on what my class is doing and some tidbits on the Passport program.
